When persons taking psychotropic medications decide the drugs are doing more harm than good and try to stop taking them, they usually face the major issue of withdrawal symptoms. These can be devastating and debilitating both physically and mentally. Unfortunately, even after a prolonged abstinence from these medications, some of them find refuge in the liver and the body’s fatty tissues and may re-emerge years later at unexpected times, particularly during a body cleanse. This re-emergence may make one feel as if he or she was still taking the medication. It is important for individuals who are switching from psychotropic medications to vitamin and mineral-based supplements such as EMPowerplus understand that these side effects are only temporary and will eventually disappear.

Our brains function through a complex system of brain cells called Glial cells and their interaction with neuron cells. While Glial cells can be regenerated, neurons cannot. Therein lies the challenge for proper brain function. As the brain ages, neuron cells tend to die off resulting in degeneration and loss of brain function. Debilitating diseases such as Alzheimer”s, Parkinson”s , Huntington’s disease and senile dementia are often the result of this degeneration. Fortunately, recent studies have identified certain nutrients that can be supplemented in the diet to reduce the ravaging effects of these age-related diseases. These include, glutathione, vitamin C, Alpha Lipoic acid, curcumin, and reseveratrol. Administered in the proper doses, several of these nutrients have been shown to reduce the symptoms of these diseases by up to 40%.

Nutrient intervention at the early onset of brain diseases could be the key to greatly prolonging brain function on those predisposed to these illnesses.

Mounting evidence suggests that most forms of mental illness including bipolar disorder and schizophrenia result from a deficiency of nutrients (mainly minerals)in the brain either caused by inadequate absorption from the gut, or the inability of the brain to properly utilize nutrients. Numerous studies have detailed the effects of adding single minerals to the diet to observe whether individual nutrients could resolve the issue. These attempts have more often than not had limited success, ie. lithium intervention. Unfortunately, these attempts at single ingredient remedies usually upset nutrient balances creating deficiencies in other nutrients. A broad-based approach seems to be the better alternative since there is often a synergistic effect of several nutrients producing the final result

With approximately 20% of Americans suffering from some form of mental disorder, there is a crying need for solutions to be found. The pharmaceutical community have stepped up to the plate with medications that tend to mask symptoms but do not offer cures for the various mental issues. These medications often have frightening side effects which at the very least render the patient unable to think clearly, or perform normal daily tasks without some restrictions. More than ever, there is a great need for alternative medications that sidestep the issues with pharmaceuticals. Fortunately, very promising results are now forthcoming with double blind university studies on vitamin and mineral supplements. These studies have revolutionized the way many health care professionals are viewing the treatment of mental illness issues today.

Various issues surrounding this whole subject will be the focus of further discussions.
